A load of firewood delivered to friend Jack was discovered to contain a log of wonderfully figured maple; the fiddleback curl went completely through the log. Thankfully, Jack made it available to a few of us woodturners, and we wasted no time taking him up on the offer.
This is the first bowl completed from the log. As you can see, the curly figure occurs all the way across it, reflecting light in stripes like the back of a vintage violin. The rim is lightly dyed with a greenish blue tint, enhancing the figure there; the rim is slightly undercut. A small foot gives the bowl a bit of lift.
The bowl has a buffed varnish finish, polished with fine waxes to a silky lustre.
